Lynn Haven, Florida, was founded in 1910 by W. H. Lynn. To advertise the area he put ads in the NATIONAL TRIBUNE, a Grand Army of the Republic newspaper printed in Washington, D. C. He wrote of Lynn Haven as the "new Gateway to the Gulf." He wrote glowing accounts of a healthy perfect climate that would free one from rheumatism and respiratory ailments. The lots were sold sight unseen for $150.00. The old soldiers purchased the lots and traveled to Washington County, Florida to settle. Bay County was created from Washington County in 1913. The editor of the Lynn Haven Free Press interviewed the new residents and published their biographies in the newspaper. Many died soon after their biographies appeared. The Lynn Haven cemetery has a section devoted to these old Union soldiers as well as a statute erected by the GAR in 1920. It stands as the only statute in the South to memorialize a Union soldier.
