Biography of F. N. WHIPS, Hand written.

I was born in Perry co. Ohio, Jan 1846. When I was about four years old my parents moved to Blackford Co. Ind. in a covered wagon, they built a log cabin in the middle of a tract of land thickly wooded, of nearly all kinds of trees. They chopped them down, cut them in logs and burned them in order to clear the land to farm. I think I was six years old when I started to school. It was in a log house, there was holes bored in the logs on three sides, wooden pins, driven in the holes, on those pins was planks sawed from logs, for our desks, we sat with our backs to the middle of the room, on benches with out any backs.

If we had more than three or four months school in a year, it was by subscription also much a scholar for a certain length of time, the teacher would board around with the scholars week about, we had to furnish our own books. Some times there would be one spelling book, or reader, to a family.

We had to go through the timber to go to school. There was lots of deer in the Timber at that time, and large flocks of wild turkeys, also pheasants, squirrels, coons and timber wolves. I was quite a young boy when my mother died.

In the year of 1855 my father went to California and I never saw him again.

At this time there was a great deal of other land west of Missouri River was called the great American Desert!

I was not 16 years old when I enlisted in the Civil War and served 4 years and 4 months. I was in 17 baffles and 4 seiges, was in the last battle of the war on the Rio Grand River, Texas. The last man killed in battle belonged in our regiment. The 34 Ind. Co B. his name was Williams.

I was mustered out, Dec 1865 at Browneville Texas. When I reached home, I went to school, and taught school. Was married at 24 years of age. In the winter of 1872 we left Ind. for eastern Nebraska where we settled on a homestead in Butler Co. We with others went through 3 different scourages of grasshoppers where they literally ate up all growing crops.

Also 2 or 3 blizzards where a good deal of stock was lost as well as people perished.

Prairie fires which came pretty close.

In 1899 we came to Perkins Co. where I farmed and run cattle we finally moved to Grant and here we are now.

Delaware Co, Niles TWP Property

Section 23 was taken up in the years of 1833 and 1836, inclusive. The parties first purchasing the lands in this section were Abraham Shideler, Washington Heldren, John Irvin, Absalom Edwards, Reuben Hampton, Isaac Edwards, Samuel Kite, Ochmig Bird, Benjamin Harris and James Harter. The present owners of land in section 23 outside of the corporation of the town of Eaton are E. N. Clouse, J. S. Clouse, J. Pixley and J. and R. Dragoo. However, as the amount of land owned by these parties and lying in section 23 is only 194 acres, it will be seen that the town of Eaton covers more than two-thirds of the section, and we have neither space nor data for giving the names of all the owners of realty in the thriving young city of Eaton. The Mississinewa river crosses the southwest portion of the section. School No. 1 is in the town of Eaton, and the German Baptist or Dunkard church is in the southwest quarter of the section.
