AULT #2619 Mother: Julianna YOHE #2621
Per the Belmont County History, Juliana YOHE was the mother of John AULT's children, rather than "Susan ____" as indicated by Ref. #1 from Fulton County Cemetery Indexes.
In April, 1996, compiler received a photocopy of an article about Adam AULT taken from the 1883 County Atlas. The text follows:
Adam, the son of John and Julia A. AULT, was born in Stark County, OH, January 21, 1842. He has the somewhat remarkable distinction of belonging to a family of fourteen children, nine sons and five daughters. Of these, he has lost by death one sister, the youngest of the family, and five brothers. His parents, with ten children, came to Indiana in 1849, and settled on a farm four and a half miles west of Rochester, where the father, aged about eighty years, still resides. His mother died in 1879, at the age of sixty-seven years. He remained at home, assisting his father in clearing the farm and tending the crops, until the date of his marriage, which occurred on the 2nd of October, 1862. His chosen companion was Mary J., the daughter of James and Mary KEELY, old citizens, residing at the time in the neighborhood of his father. His wife was born March 19, 1843. To these parents were born three children...Anetta, born July 23, 1863; Oliver S., born September 3, 1866; and Willis, who died in infancy April 4, 1871. The first two years of his married life were on a farm; the next three in Plymouth, Marshall County; from Plymouth he came back to Fulton County and farmed for two more years. About the 1st of March, 1871, he moved to Rochester, where he has ever since resided. Since 1871, he has been engaged in the manufacture and sale of "Ault's Proprietary Medicines", in which business he has been eminently successful. Though beginning on a very small capital, he has increased his business until his medicines are now in demand throughout Northern Indiana and parts of other States. John AULT was born September 28, 1803; came to Fulton County in 1849, where he still lives an old man. Juliana AULT was born September 22, 1811, and deceased January 24, 1877.(Compiler's note) Disagreement exists on the death of Julia A./Juliana AULT between the beginning of the paragraph and the final sentence. The date of death given in the last sentence agrees with the data from "Cemetery Inscriptions".

The article about her husband, taken from the Fulton County Atlas, gives Mary's date of birth and marriage date. It also mentions that Mary was the daughter of James and Mary KEELY, "old citizens" residing in the neighborhood of (Adam's) father. The AULT'S three children are named and vital dates are given; the article goes on to say they first lived two years on a farm; the next three in Plymouth, Marshall County, IN. Then they returned to Fulton County and farmed two more years. In March, 1871, they moved to Rochester, and Adam began his manufacture and sale of "Ault's Proprietary Medicines". As of 1883, they were still living there.
Obituary
(Compiler's note) The article on Adam Ault states that the Ault's had a third child who died in infancy.
The burial place of Mary J. Keely Ault has not been confirmed; her husband is buried with their daughter Annetta and James Johnson at the IOOF Cemetery in Rochester, IN, but there is no mention of Mary J.'s grave in the "Fulton County Cemetery Inscriptions".

Doubt that Joseph A. AULT was the father of compiler's great uncle was eased by p. 135 of the Fulton County Cemetery Index, which enumerated the graves at Citizen's Cemetery in Rochester, IN. Notations on this page lend support that Joseph and his first wife, "Ellen" LUCAS were the parents of a son, John, b. Sept. 1869..." This record, along with the marriage index from Fulton County, indicate that Ellen probably died in Union Twp. between 1870-1875. Joseph married Martha E. CROMER in 1876; they were enumerated in Rochester in 1880. At that time, son John was 10.
John and Mary Anderson GILCHRIST were married in Fulton County, where Mary lived with her parents, Thomas and Phoebe, on the James GILCHRIST family
farm. Sometime after the birth of their sixth son, Clarence, the family moved to Culver, IN (Marshall County). The couple remained there until Mary's death.
Obituary
Compiler remembers very little about "Uncle John Ault", except he was a rather small man with pointed nose and chin and grey hair. The last visit remembered was after his wife died and he was living alone in their small house in Culver, IN. Compiler was given permission to try out the antique pump organ that stood in the parlor. After playing several hymns, compiler was wishing she had a fine, old musical instrument like that organ; "Uncle John" made the promise that after he was "gone", compiler could have it. (of course the promise was forgotten in the years that followed)
In an interview with John's nephew, Byron GILCHRIST, compiler recorded the following recollections:
"Uncle John was kind of a "puny" and unusual man. He never did much but just make a living for his family. If he met you once, he ALWAYS knew you! He was an accomplished harmonica player."

Mary Anderson GILCHRIST was the only daughter of Thomas GILCHRIST known to have survived until adulthood. There are reports among county histories that the GILCHRISTs had at least one other daughter who died in infancy. The grave marker for that child stands near Thomas and Phoebe's graves at Leiter's Ford, IN, but the inscription does not give a surname. Historians have assumed this child as well as two other infants in the same area belonged to the GILCHRISTs. Family tradition has made no mention of these three children.
Mary was obviously named for her paternal grandmother, who came from SCOTLAND to Jefferson County, IN as "Mary ANDERSON" about 1818. In 1826, Mary ANDERSON married James GILCHRIST, another immigrant from SCOTLAND.
Mary A. GILCHRIST married John AULT when about 18 years of age; she had the first of her six sons within the first year of marriage. She lived her entire life in Fulton and Marshall Counties in IN; she died in Culver, IN at the age of 73.
From pictures owned by compiler, Mary appears to have been quite short. In pictures taken in her youth, Mary's face looks round and soft-featured; her hair was dark, but was worn pulled back from her face probably with a braid or a twist at the back of her head. She was rather plump as a young lady, but
not obese. In middle-aged pictures, Mary had become quite a bit heavier and her facial features had started to take on a more sharply defined appearance. In later years, Mary's nose and chin were rather prominent; she remained heavy-set until the last time compiler saw her, just a year or two before her death.
Per the 1920 census for Fulton County, IN, John and Mary A. AULT were enumerated in Richland Township. Mary's age was recorded as "44"; five of the couple's six sons were enumerated in their household on 10 January. Two days later, however, Howard and Harry were enumerated a second time in the household of Arley JONES. On the later record, the two young men were classified as "Hired Hands".

JOHN F. AULT.
Included in the information re the Citizen Cemetery in Rochester was the following information on John AULT: April 1996: The copy of the "Adam Ault' article, taken from the Fulton Co. Atlas, gives the exact birth date of John Ault as "September 28, 1803." This article also states that John was still living on his farm four and a half
miles west of Rochester at the time of the article.

The history of Samuel KEELY, son of James KEELY and Mary (McKEE)(PEATTIE, ref. #9 above) states that Anthony W. McKEE served as a soldier in the Western Department of the U.S. Army during the War of 1812. Compiler wrote N.A. to request a Veteran's Pension File, but none was found. The graves are broken and very difficult to locate,... (----), -------, Died Sept. 2----Ag--- 72 yr-3----. (Note: This is the lower left part of this marker, and all that remains of it. It probably is a part of the Anthony McKEE stone. Manitou Chapter Dar, Genealocial Survey... reveals that Anthony McKEE died Sept. 22, 1868, age 73 yr-3mo-21da. ...He was born June 1, 1795. He married Nancy AGNEW, and they were residents of Shelby Co., Indiana by ca. 1834; and in Fulton Co., IN by 1850.

Per the above source, John AULT's tombstone states that he died Dec. 26, 1883, "age 80yr-2mo-28da."
Compiler questioned the timing of John AULT's marriage to Julia A./Julianna. If they did not marry until after 1850, it seems unusual that John's youngest child, the only one born in IN, would have been named "Julia A." Also, three of John's children named their daughters "Julia A." It seems likely that John's daughter Julia A.,
born about 1850 was the child of his second wife, Julia A./Julianna.
Jan. 1996: Compiler's husband responded to a query for AULT information taken from the "Fulton County Folk Finder". The contact person, Peggy HATCHER, is a resident of Belmont County, OH and has been researching the AULT family there. She and her husband were in search of a "Hammond AULT", son of Frederick and grandson of Philip.
24 JAN 1996, Mrs. HATCHER sent a photocopy of "Belmont County History 1988" to us. That article supports compiler's theory that Julianna married John F. AULT before 1850 and was probably the mother of most of his children.
In the "Philip Ault Family" article, the marriage of John F. (1803-1883) is reported to be to Julianna YOHE. Mrs. HATCHER then found a marriage recorded in Wayne Co.,
OH for a John F. AULT to "Julesha" YOHE in the IGI records. This wedding took place 27 AUG 1829. The History states this couple had 14 children and moved to Fulton County, IN.
The Fulton Co., Cemetery Records accounts for only 10 children being born to John F., but there could have been more who did not move with the family to Fulton County. Unfortunately, the Belmont Co. History does not list the children by name.
There is no mention in the Belmont History of "Susan" who was reported in the Fulton Cemetery index as being the first wife of John F. AULT.
Per the "Family Tree Maker's..." census index for 1830, there were two John AULTs enumerated in Smith Township, Belmont County, OH in 1830. This source gives only the name of the head of the household and the location of that person.

Whether Anthony was involved other than to provide shelter for Shaker families migrating across OHIO is unknown, but he apparently did provide a shelter to at least one group in Feb., 1824. The AGNEWS were members of the Whitewater Shaker Community in Butler County, OHIO per the research of M. TAUNTON.
Anthony and Nancy (AGNEW) are reported to have been among the pioneer settlers of Shelby County, IN, arriving between 1830 and 1840. Their daughter Mary married James KEELY in Shelby County in 1835. By 1850, Anthony KEELY and his family, James and Mary (McKEE) KEELY and at least three of Mary's married brothers had all relocated in Fulton
County, IN, in the area around Rochester.
Nancy (AGNEW) McKEE died in Fulton County, IN in March, 1860. In 1860 Anthony, aged 64 years, is enumerated in the home of his son Albert "Russell" in Rochester Township. Anthony's death is reported to have taken place in Rochester on 22 Sep. 1868.
In Oct., 1995, Wilma (MOW) FOLTZ, a resident of Fulton County provided compiler with the pages from a record of graves found in the McKEE Cemetery near Loyal, IN. The cemetery had been recorded and published in a DAR project in 1935, but only about 4 graves appeared in that publishing. In October, 1975, other graves were found and recorded. The following is taken from those pages: "...on the Old Alonzo Sheets (now Joseph Richards) farm, R.R.3, in Rochester Twp,...It is on 250 North, about one and three-tenths miles west of 250N & 400W...1&1/2 mi. west of Loyal...at the very back of a field, in the corner,
