Ms. TAUNTON, in the excerpts sent from SHAKERS OF OHIO and THE GREENING OF WEST BRANCH, does not say whether Nancy AGNEW was ever a member of the Shaker movement; however, members of her family were. List of members for 1835 include the names of some of her brothers and sisters; also, after the death of her father, her mother, Margaret (BRANT) AGNEW married Joseph BOGGETT. The BOGGETTs were members of the "Center Family," one of three divisions of the Whitewater Shaker Community.

Page 214 of THE GREENING OF WEST BRANCH states:

"Shaker societies were divided into two or more "families" of about thirty members each. They all lived in one large house but with separate entrances and bedrooms for each sex. Whitewater Village was divided into families, including the "Center Family," where Joseph and "Peggy" (Margaret AGNEW) BOGGETT lived, and the "South Family," headed by Joseph AGNEW (Nancy's brother.) The spiritual affairs were governed by the "elders," two men and two women, who were accountable to the ministry, or "the elders of the elders." Joseph AGNEW was elder in the South Family of Whitewater Village.
"Deacons" or "trustees" were charged with overseeing the business affairs of the community and reported directly to the elders. Brant AGNEW (another of Nancy's brothers) was named as a village trustee in 1831."
Another excerpt taken from this book, page 235 states:

"[February 1824] At Union Village the Darby people were joined by Thomas HUNT, who went with them to Whitewater, where all arrived in safety. They first stopped with Anthony McKEE, but after ten days got possession of their new land, and moved into a cabin eighteen feet square, with a lean-to in the rear. Necessity compelled them to use this until larger quarters could be obtained."
It is obvious from this excerpt, that Anthony and Nancy McKEE were, at least, accepting of the Shaker groups, and were helpful in their migration to Butler County, OH, whether or not they were active members of the society.
The McKEES had migrated from Butler County to Shelby County, IN by census time in 1840. Sometime before the 1850 Census, they moved again to Fulton County, near Rochester, IN.
Nancy (AGNEW) McKEE died in Fulton County in March, 1860. Her husband, Anthony Wayne, aged 64 was enumerated in the home of their son Albert Russell McKEE, in the dwelling just next to James KEELY and his wife, Mary (McKEE) in 1860.
Oct., 1995, Wilma FOLTZ, genealogical researcher and desc. of the MOW family, furnished photocopies of data taken from the McKEE Cemetery. On page 53 of this photocopy, the following data appears:
"This abandoned burying ground is on the Old Alonzo Sheets (now Joseph Richards) farm, R.R. 3, in Rochester Twp, Fulton Co., IN... 250 North, about one and three-tenths miles west of 250N & 400W... 1 & 1/2 mi. west of Loyal...
...the very back of a field, in the corner, about two city blocks north of the road, and behind an old barn...
The graves are broken and very difficult to locate, most of the pieces being under ground..." (in 1935 DAR published a listing for this cemetery, but included only 4 graves) "...Information was recorded October 5, 1975... McKEE, (first piece) Nancy, wife of A.McKEE (broken under her name). (2nd piece) died Mar. 5, 1860, age 59 yr - 11 mo. (broken here and rest of stone is missing)
(Note: These two pieces of this stone were found separately, but they fit together perfectly. They definitely belong together..."
Also recorded as one of the graves in the McKEE Cemetery is that of "(-----), Olive M., dau. of -------.
(Note: Top part of this marker was all that was found. It is a child-type marker with a lamb carved in the top."

This could have been a child of Nancy AGNEW and Anthony McKEE, or it could have been their grandchild, a daughter of David A. and Sarah (STRAUP) McKEE.

Ms. TAUNTON has provided only the 1830 census which may include Sylvester as the "1 male 5-10 years old," that appears in the McKEE household in Butler County, OH. Compiler has assumed the place of birth as OHIO because of the timing...this family was in OHIO 1820 and 1830 at census enumeration time.
Ms. TAUNTON states that Sylvester died in Shelby Co., IN , but she did not include her source of this information.
There is a marriage record in Fulton County, IN for a Sylvester McKEE to Martha DOWNS, 18 FEB 1869. This would have been when this Sylvester was over 40 years of age, so this may be a different Sylvester McKEE.

There were obviously some errors made in tallying the children in the McKEE family in the 1840 Census for Shelby Co. There simply are not enough counted to account for all of Anthony Wayne MCKEE's children in each age group. No other references were provided for Ms. TAUNTON's data on this James McKEE.
Oct., 1995, Wilma FOLTZ sent compiler a photocopy of a two and one-half page record of the graves in the McKEE Cemetery in Fulton Co. The record includes the following information:
"This abandoned burying ground is on the Old Alonzo Sheets (now Joseph Richards) farm, R.R. 3, in Rochester twp, Fulton Co....It is on 250 North, about one and three-tenths miles west of 250 N & 400 W.... about 1-1/2 mi. west of Loyal...
The cemetery is at the very back of a field, in the corner, about two city blocks north of the road, and behind an old barn which sets on the north side of the road...
The graves are broken and very difficult to locate...
Information was recorded October 5, 1975...McKEE, James, son of A. & N. McKee, died Jan. 14, 1859, age 20yr-1mo-18da. (broken across age line)"
There is also an explanation that this cemetery was recorded by a chapter of the DAR in 1935, but only about 4 graves were included in that record.

Obituary

Christopher CAMPBELL was apparently a rather prominent citizen in Rochester, IN in the mid to late 1800s. Two county histories include biographies of him and his family.

See additional biography

"FULTON COUNTY FOLKS" Vol. 2, p. 108, contains another sketch of the CAMPBELL family. Much of the information here is the same as before, but a few datails of interest follow:
The saga of the Fulton County CAMPBELLs in this country goes back to an 18-year-old boy named John CAMPBELL, who arrived in Baltimore, Md., in 1815. Two years later, his parents, two sisters, Jeanette and Isabella, and two brothers, Angus and Donald, followed...(Christopher) was known as a "Black Republican" because of his sympathy for the colored people and help with the underground railway through Fulton County... This account also contains a photograph of the John and Clara (BARCHER) CAMPBELL family. Christopher, seated between his brother, Daniel, and his mother, apears to be of rather average build, with a long, narrow face, a full beard and dark hair.

****************************************

Although most records report Christopher's church affiliation as Presbyterian, one of the Misc. Record Books in the Fulton County Recorder's Office contains the minutes of the "M.E. Church" (Methodist Evangelical) in Aubbeenaubbee Twp. which states that Christopher CAMPBELL was elected to the Board of Trustees for that church 27 MAR 1875.
Compiler received christening data, etc. for some of Christopher's children from a requested search of the records of the First Presbyterian Church in Rochester, IN. There was no reference in those records to the GILCHRIST family or to the mother of James and John C. CAMPBELL. Compiled by:Ann & Ernie Grubb

Page 145, "Fulton County Cemetery Inscriptions" carries the following information on the "abandoned burying ground" that was thought to have been the family cemetery of the SUTLEY/SUTTLY family:
The Manitou Chapter DAR, "Genealogical Survey Fulton County Indiana Cemeteries,"1935, indicates that this cemetery was located on the (old) Frederick AGSTER farm, about one mile northeast of Leiters Ford in Aubbeenaubbee Twp...
...there were three graves...The cemetery has long been abandoned and markers destroyed...
...The three graves mentioned ...were:

SUTLEY,Christopher" , --- his wife" , Jacob, their son.

...Henry S. SUTTLY and wife Mary, ... were here by mid. 1840s, and who settled in Aubbee Twp.
Henry S. SUTTLY (b. 1804 PA) married, second, in 1861 to Elmira WILSON, ... first wife, Mary (b. ca. 1805 PA)was missing from the family in the 1860 census.
The only member of this family still here by 1880 was a son-in-law, Christopher CAMPBELL. ... It appears likely that in some way, Christopher SUTLEY was related to Henry S. SUTTLY.
Children of Henry S. SUTTLY: (1) Sarah Jane, b. ca. 1832 PA; m. 18 Oct. 1849, John HOLLAND, and family gone from Fulton Co. by 1860; (2) Jacob C., b.ca.1833 PA, gone by 1870; (3) Jeremiah, b.ca.1837 PA; (4) Angeline, b.15 Apr 1838 PA, d.1858 (Leiters Ford,...), first wife of Christopher CAMPBELL whom she m. 30 Oct.1856. Father: James GILCHRIST #122
    Mother: Mary ANDERSON #121

The spelling of the name of this daughter of James and Mary ANDERSON GILCHRIST is uncertain. Her tombstone reads "Jennett"; her marriage license reads "Janet"; deed books, newspapers and county history articles, etc. contain variations of her name. Since she was probably named for one of her Scottish ancestors, compiler has chosen the spelling used in sources from SCOTLAND--Jennet or Gennet.
Jennet GILCHRIST was born about the 15th or 16th of June in 1835. This has been calculated from her age as given on the tombstone: "JENNETT, wife of C. CAMPBELL, DIED Oct. 4, 1865, Aged 30 y's, 3 m's & 18 d's."
The 1840 census shows one female in the age bracket "5-10" in the home of James GILCHRIST in Jefferson County, IN. The family moved to Fulton County about 1846. On the 1850 census, there is a 15-year-old female who most likely is Jennet, but her name is recorded as "Nancy". (Both of the GILCHRISTs probably spoke with strong accents which may have contributed to the error) By 1860, Jennet was enumerated in the home of her new husband, Christopher CAMPBELL. As of 20 JULY 1860, "Jannett" was 24 years old; she had a 3-year-old step-daughter, Angeline, born to Christopher's first wife, Angeline SUTLEY.
In June 1861, Jennet gave birth to her first son, "John C." About two years later, a second son, James T. (perhaps "James Thomas" for Jennet's father and brothers?) was born to the couple. Their third child, also a boy, was born in July before his brother died in September, 1865. He was also given the name of "John" but the middle initial was changed to "B". Just why these boys' names were the same is not known, but it is possible that Jennet and her husband had reason to believe that John C. would not survive. It was customary among Scots to name a later child in memory of one who had died earlier. On the other hand, circuit rider ministers did not return to the same parish every week or two, and newborns were often not named until the minister returned to the area to christen the infant. It could be that John B. remained nameless until after his brother had died, simply waiting for the return of the minister to christen him. John C. died 26 September 1865; his mother died just eight days later. It is also possible that the baby, John B., was named by his father after the death of John C. and Jennett.
With the death of Jennet, Christopher was left a widower for the second time. This time he was left with three motherless children. His daughter, Angeline, was about 8 years old; his sons by Jennet were two years of age and two months of age respectively. Christopher married a third time in 1867.
March 1860, James and Mary GILCHRIST, had conveyed 60 acres of their farm to Jennet. This was probably meant to be her share of their estate, since her brothers were deeded 180 acres less than a month before. When the delinquent tax list was published in the Rochester newspaper in January 1867, the name of "CAMPBELL, JENNETTE" was listed among land owners owing taxes.
In November 1871, Christopher CAMPBELL and James GILCHRIST were served with a summons for a civil suit filed against them by the State of Indiana. The detailed records of this case have not been located. The result of the case is unknown, but somehow, Christopher retained title to the land. In August of 1888, Christopher, his wife, Rebecca (ZUCK), and his son, John B. conveyed this parcel of land to Jennet's older son, James T. (After the death of James T.'s first wife, Barbara LEITER, James sold the land back to his younger brother, John B. CAMPBELL.)
