============================================================================ Wife: Mary Rebecca ZUCK #141 Married: 14 MAR 1867 in: Rochester (Fulton) IN Marr. Ceremony? Y/N: Divorced/Annulled/Separated: End Year: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Born: 17 DEC 1840 in: OHIO Church: in: Died: 05 OCT 1923 in: Kentland (Newton) IN Cemetery: IOOF in: Leiters Ford (Fulton) IN Other: in: Military: Occupation: Father: Daniel ZUCK #1384 Mother: Sarah (ZUCK) #1385
Contrary to family tradition, Rebecca ZUCK was the third wife of Christopher CAMPBELL. For many years, family tradition had reported that she was Rebecca GILCHRIST prior to her marriage. Documents indicate that she was born in OHIO, as were her parents, Daniel ZUCK and Sarah (maiden name unknown).
At the time of her marriage, Rebecca became step-mother to Angeline, the daughter of Christopher and Angeline SUTLEY, and two of Christopher's sons by Jennet GILCHRIST, his second wife. A third son born to Jennet died just a few days before his mother in 1865. Rebecca and Christopher had at least six more children after their marriage.
In May, 1873, Daniel ZUCK, Rebecca's father, signed with Christopher on an IOU to Albert CARR for $95.00. This loan was paid 30 MAY 1873. In March, 1874, Isaac ZUCK of Santa Clara County, CA gave Christopher Power of Attorney to take care of "all business affairs in Fulton County" for him. Isaac was probably a brother to Rebecca, however, it appears that Isaac's wife was also named "Rebecca ZUCK". On 21 April 1880, Isaac N. ZUCK and Rebecca A. ZUCK, "husband and wife...of the County of Dundy, State of Nebraska..." conveyed to Chrsitopher CAMPBELL 60 acres of land in Section 21, Towmship 31 North, Range 1 East, Fulton County. There was a condition on this conveyance that "...said
premises...are free from incumberance except the interest of Jane STREET..." (possibly a sister to Rebecca and Isaac?)
Three days later Rebecca M. CAMPBELL conveyed 40 acres of Section 26, same township and range, to Christopher, her husband. It appears from these deeds that the properties were part of the estate of Daniel ZUCK and that he must have died between 1873 and 1888. On April 24, the day of Rebecca's conveyance of 40 acres to her husband, Christopher conveys back to his wife the 60 acres he had purchased from Isaac and Rebecca three days before!
Christopher died in 1903 after an illness of two years. Between the time of his death and the 1910 census, Rebecca evidently left Fulton County and
moved to Newton County, IN where she died in OCT 1923. Whether she was living with one of her married children or another relative is not known. She was buried beside her husband in the cemetery at Leiters Ford.

24-JAN-1998 Family Group Sheet Page 1 ============================================================================ Husband: James T. CAMPBELL #143 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Born: 22 APR 1863 in: Fulton County, IN Church: in: Died: 02 APR 1939 in: Cemetery: in: Other: in: Military: Occupation: Father: Christopher CAMPBELL #137 Mother: Janet\Jennet GILCHRIST #136
James T. CAMPBELL was the second of three sons born to Christopher and Jennet (GILCHRIST) CAMPBELL, in Aubbeenaubbee Township, Fulton County, IN. James was only about two years old when his mother died, leaving Christopher with a seven-year-old daughter by his first marriage, James T. and a two-month-old baby, John B.
In March, 1867, Christopher CAMPBELL married for the third time, this marriage to Rebecca ZUCK. By the time of the 1870 census enumeration, the couple had added two more children to their household. James was seven at that time, and John B. was 5.
In 1880, 19-year-old James was still living at home; the CAMPBELL household had grown to include eight children, plus a 27-year-old nephew
of Christopher's or Rebecca's, who was teaching school and living with the CAMPBELLs.
Four years later, James T. married Barbara Ann LEITER, the daughter of a neighbor of the GILCHRIST family, Jacob LEITER. Barbara's father apparently owned a large amount of land in the area now known as "Leiters Ford" in Fulton County. In 1864, Jacob and his wife, Lydia, sold a small parcel of land to James and Mary GILCHRIST, grandparents of James T. Maps of the area around Leiters Ford in the mid-to-late 1800s show considerable property belonging to the Leiters.
In 1860, shortly after her marriage to Christopher CAMPBELL, Jennet purchased about one third of her parents' holdings in Rochester Township. After her death,
this property evidently went to her husband, but in 1867 there was a court case wherein the State of Indiana filed suit against Christopher CAMPBELL and James GILCHRIST. Compiler has tried in vain to find the details of that court case, but there is some evidence that it had to do with that parcel of property. (Jennet was named on a delinquent tax list for the county in 1866.) Although documentation re the outcome of this case has not been located, Christopher evidently retained the property of his dead wife, perhaps in trust for her two sons.
In August, 1888, Christopher, his wife, Rebecca and John B. CAMPBELL conveyed the above-mentioned property to James T. CAMPBELL. In November, 1895, Barbara A. and
James T. CAMPBELL took out a mortgage for 26+ acres just to the north of that 60 acres.
Rosemary WILLIAMS, in researching this family for compiler, found and provided a photocopy of "1896 FULTON COUNTY SCHOOL ENUMERATION," which shows CAMPBELL childre - "Ida, 9, F; Genette, 7, F; and Frank, 6, M" with guardians "J.A. CAMPBELL/Barbera CAMPBELL."
Although compiler has been unable to find death or burial records for Barbara (LEITER) CAMPBELL, she apparently died between 1896 and 1900. Compiler found James, "widowed", enumerated as a boarder in the home of Garrison and Sara WALTERS. Three of his children by Barbara LEITER are enumerated in the homes of relatives and a nin-year-old son, Frank, is
enumerated as "Boarder" in the home of Frank H. and Mattie COOK.
Just three months prior to the 1900 enumeration, James sold the sixty acres he had received from his father and his brother, John B., back to John B. The deed also contained the statement, "The grantee assumes the mortgage against the above described lands."
Fulton County Marriage Records show a marriage 14 April 1901 for James T. CAMPBELL to Amanda KEISTER. Per the 1910 census, James and Amanda had two daughters, born after this marriage - Alma was 8 years of age and Thelma, 5. Also enumerated in their household were Frank, son, 19; Hugh, son, 17; and a 13-year-old "son", whose given name was unreadable on the film.
A history of the
Leiters Ford area found in the Public Library in Fulton County, shows (on p 51) a group picture of students of Leiters Ford High School 1905-1906. The fifth person in the front row of this group is "Jenette CAMPBELL", James' daughter. Four years later, she had apparently married, but this marriage did not appear in the Fulton County Marriage Index pages photocopied by compiler. Addie was also missing from the household by 1910, but compiler failed to photocopy the first page of CAMPBELL marriages which would have included given names beginning with "a" prior to "an".
In 1912, "Elizabeth SLUMAN and Arnold H. SLUMAN her husband of Fulton County..." "for the sum of One Dollar and the exchange of properties,"
conveyed to James T. CAMPBELL "of Fulton County" two parcels of land in Section 23, part of which was situated just north of the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, where James' parents were buried. Which property James gave over in this exchange was not found.
Also in 1912, "Addie B. SALES, and her husband Kline W. SALES; Jeanette CAMPBELL, a single woman over the age of 21 years; and Frank CAMPBELL, a single man over the age of 21 years of Fulton County...Release and quit claim to James T. CAMPBELL of Fulton County, in the State of Indiana for and in consideration of One thousand dollars ...Thirty one acres of uniform width off of the entire west side of the east half of the north west quarter of section twenty five, township
thirty one north, range one east, exclusive of the right of way of the Chicago and Erie Railroad Company..."
The lower portion of this deed shows the notarized statement of "Jeannette CAMPBELLE, a single woman grantor..." This statement was notarized in Cook County, IL on 04 June 1912.
Then on 25 April 1915, James T. CAMPBELL and Amanda E. CAMPBELL, his wife, "of Warren County, in the State of Indiana," along with Frank E. and Mary P. HALL, also of Warren County, convey to John B. CAMPBELL, the brother of James, "a strip of land Thirty (30) feet wide of uniform width off the entire west side of the north east fractional Quarter 1/4 of the north west fractional Quarter 1/4 of Section Twenty (20), Township (31) north, range
two east, containing one half acre more or less..."
From the above deeds, plus the report of Byron GILCHRIST that James CAMPBELL and family had migrated to WISCONSIN, compiler assumed that James, at least, had left the Fulton County area permanently. Then, Rosemary WILLIAM, in research done at the Fulton County Health Department, found a death record for James "G." CAMPBELL, b. April 22, 1863 d. 2/20(?) April 1939. The identity of James CAMPBELL's wife was not recorded, but his parents were listed as "C. CAMPBELL, b. Maryland" and "Jeanette GILCHRIST, b. ____"
The place of burial of James is still unknown. (Aug. 1997)

Apparently Barbara LEITER died prior to the 1900 census enumeration, leaving her husband, James T. CAMPBELL, with six children. On that census, James was enumerated as "widowed", in the household of Garrison and Sara WALTERS. His relationship to the head of the household was given as "Boarder." The CAMPBELLs' children were found scattered among several households on that census.
Barbara was enumerated as 5 years old in the household of Jacob and Lydia LEITER in 1870 in Fulton County. Jacob was a neighbor of and thought to be a friend of James GILCHRIST, James T. CAMPBELL's maternal grandfather. He was also the grantor in a property deed which named James GILCHRIST as grantee in the early 1860s.
Compiler has been
unable to locate the place of Barbara (LEITER) CAMPBELL'S burial, as of Nov. 1997.
