In the early 1990s compiler happened upon some STEININGER graves in Fulton and/or Marshall Counties in IN, whose owners were not familiar names. Compiler copied some of the data from these tombstones to keep on file "just in case" some of them became more meaningful as the family histories were recorded.
In Dec., 1997, compiler's husband found considerable data on the "BUEHLER" family and the connections with other surnames such as HASSENPLUG, STEININGER, etc. on GenServ. Digging back into earlier notes, compiler found records of an interview with Byron GILCHRIST, as well as notes from a letter Byron had dictated to his daughter in April, 1997. Attempting to tie all of these together and to straighten out some erroneous or conflicting data, compiler searched for the cemetery notes mentioned above, but did not locate them.
There exists much confusion in family tradition concerning Eliza (BEEHLER) STEININGER. In the early stages of this compiler's research, Margarett (STICHLER) STEININGER has written in a letter that Eliza had possessed a "sixth sense" that could well have saved the family from traveling in a large circle during their wagon journey from Ohio to Indiana. Since the BEEHLERs were found on the 1870 census in Indiana, and Eliza's place of birth was given as "Indiana" in 1864, this story did not seem plausible. Compiler thought this incident might have taken place in the reported move from Indiana to KANSAS; family stories per Margarett were that this was about 1855. Again this contradicts the data found on census records and other documents concerning members of the BEEHLER family and their time in IN. (Compiler found George and Mary BEEHLER on the Fulton Co. enumeration again in 1880, but Eliza was not enumerated in the household. Since the date of her marriage has been confirmed as 1883, this raises the question of her residence at census time in 1880.)
In April, 1997, Byron GILCHRIST had his daughter, Mary, write a letter to compiler in his behalf. In that letter Byron stated that Eliza had gone to ARKANSAS. Data found on the GenServ (HASSENPLUG), places Eliza's death in Fulton County, IN in 1932. Since compiler was unable to locate earlier cemetery notes, this could not be supported by tombstone data at this time. Compiler's husband later found one of the children of Howard STEININGER's place of birth as "KANSAS". Until further research is completed, compiler has no recourse, but to Mr. HASSENPLUG, in his data which appears on the GenServ network, states that Eliza and Howard STEININGER had a child "boy STEININGER" WHO was born in KANSAS. No other data is included in the HASSENPLUG work.

Nothing was known of this, the first child, of George and Mary BEEHLER until compiler's husband found the "BUEHLER" data on GenServ, a genealogy web site in Dec., 1997.
William HASSENPLUG, the submitter of this family data, records Mary as having been the first of the BUEHLER/BEEHLER children. Since Mr. HASSENPLUG never responded to e-mail requests to exchange data, compiler has not been able to find out his sources of data on the family. It is suspected, however, that William, a nephew of Mabel (HASSENPLUG) BROWN, has inherited her research and files.
In correspondence with both Wilma (MOW) FOLTZ and Margarett (STICKLER) STEININGER, compiler was told that Mabel HASSENPLUG had done extensive work on the BUEHLER/BEEHLER family. After Mabel's death, however, the whereabouts of her files was unknown. Compiler suspects that Mabel's nephew may have that material.
In the data submitted to GenServ, Mr. HASSENPLUG gives only Mary "BUEHLER's" birth, death data and the date and identity of her spouse.
After discovering that Mary was the child of George and Mary BUEHLER, compiler realized that a listing for the "BEEHLER, Mary and GRAEBER, Charles" was included in the photocopy of pages from a marriage index for Fulton County, IN, owned by compiler. Records for this marriage exist in the Marriage Books housed at the Fulton County Clerk's Office in Rochester, IN.

    Mother: Barbara (BEEHLER) #12807

Charles F. BEEHLER appeared on the 1920 census for Fulton County as 65 years of age. His place of birth was given as "Tennessee", his parents' as "Bavaria."
In an interview with Byron GILCHRIST about 1996, compiler asked about this member of the Beehler family. Per Byron, Charles F. was another son of Charles BUEHLER, b about 1829, who was a brother to George BUEHLER/BEEHLER, Byron's grandfather. After learning of Lewis J. BEEHLER, via Mr. HASSENPLUG's data, compiler located Lewis on the same census records and also in his father's household in 1880. Although Charles F. did not appear in his parents' household in 1880, his place of birth agreed with that of Lewis J., as did their parents places of birth, etc. Compiler, therefore has taken the report of Byron to be accurate, and assumed that Lewis and Charles F. were brothers, and that both were sons of the elder Charles and his wife, "Barbe" as she appears on the 1880 census.
Compiler found confirmation of this relationship on the 1870 census for Fulton County. In HH #105, Charles and "Barbary" "BEELER", have sons, Charles, 15, Lewis, 13 and George, 8, all born in TENNESSEE. Apparently this family resided in TN from about 1850, when daughter Louisa would have been born there, until about 1864, when daughter, Mary, was born in IN.
On the same census, George and Mary "BEELER" were enumerated in HH#107. Seemingly, George remained/went to OHIO at about the same time that his brother, Charles, migrated to TN. George's daughter, Catherine, compiler's great grandmother, was born in OHIO in 1859; his son, Frankin was born in INDIANA about 1861. This would indicate that George was the first to arrive in INDIANA, and that Charles migrated there about three years later, from TENNESSEE.

The Keely estate took more than 4 years to settle, complicated by Samuel's sister, Caroline Stubbs, obtaining judgement against him in 1893..charging him with "wrongfully and unlawfully" disposing of his parent's property, paying unfiled claims and failing to properly dispurse estate proceeds to lawful heirs. In 1896, Job D. FITZPATRICK, the creditor of the estate, attempted to overturn the earlier judgement. (In 1896, the County Court declared the estate insolvent)

Another account of Samuel's life was written in "The New Historical Atlas of Fulton County, IN, 1883". Excerpts follow:

This gentleman, perhaps as widely known throughout the county in which he lives as any other man, was born in Shelby County, IN., March 23, 1827, of German and Irish descent...became a resident of Fulton County in 1853. It was during his residence in Indianapolis that he first began to use the trowel as an assistant of his father....the Keely farm, in the western part of Rochester Township. Here he found employment in tilling the soil and proscuting the work of his trade...marriage to Miss Maria Ernsperger,...To these parents were born four children--Helen V....Nettie...Maggie...and Harry S...two years after marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Keely became residents of Rochester, where he immediately embarked in the dry goods business along with his interest as salesman of agricultural implements. In this business he continued up to the year 1870, when he was elected Clerk of the county by his party. He filled this position for one term of four years and in 1874 was re-elected to the same office, serving in all, eight years as a public official. Soon after his retirement from office, he, accompanied by his family, became residents of Cambria, WI, where he purchased a large flouring mill and began the manufacture of flour on an extensive scale. All went well for several months, when a destructive fire swept his mill away. He then returned to his old home in Rochester, where he now resides, and where he is taking an active part in various enterprises for the up-building of the county...

The Atlas of 1883 gives Harry as the youngest of the Keely children and states he was born 5 Jan 1875.
The "Rochester Sentinel" for Friday, Jan. 26, 1894 carried the following:
For the first time in its history the "Sentinel" force has been invaded by death, Harry Keely, son of ex-clerk Samuel Keely, the well known compositer and pressman, being the victim. He had been in poor health for some time on account of severe pains in the head and two weeks ago notified foreman Terry that he was not well enough to fill his position and took a layoff. As late as last Friday afternoon he was about the office but took to his bed Sunday and a swelling over the right eye developed a bad case of eresypelas and this caused congestion or inflamation of the brain and he died Tuesday afternoon. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon conducted by Rev. O.A. Cook, when the following brief history of his life was read.
Harry S. Keely was born in Rochester, Ind., January 5, 1875; died January 23, 1894, aged 19 years and 18 days. Harry has always lived here in Rochester and has many friends and associates among the younger people in town. For the last two years he was an employee of the "Sentinel" office, where he became accomplished in the use of printing material, and in his chosen profession the prospects were good for future usefulness. His death was very sudden and unexpected. He became slightly ill some two weeks ago, but was able to get about and was on the street last Saturday. Sunday he was afflicted with erysipelas over one of his eyes, and being severely malignant his brain was soon inflamed and caused his death many friends mourn and weep because of the sudden demise of the only beloved son of the home. Harry was popular with his associates in the office, true as steel to any trust reposed in him, faithful to his employer and a good hearted, inoffensive fellow whose death creates much sadness.

M. TAUNTON has provided the name of Caroline KEELY's husband as William STUBBS.
This information agrees with that of the probate file per this daughter's married name. Date and place of marriage are not know as of Sept. 1995. It is assumed that Caroline and Mr. STUBBS married between 1883 and the time of James and Mary KEELYs' deaths ca 1892.
In May, 1883 the following item appeared in the "Rochester Sentinel":

"Something of a sensation was created in social circles Thursday evening by the arrest of James F. JOHNSON on a charge of bastardy preferred by Miss Carolina KEELY, youngest daughter of James KEELY. Johnson is a young man who has spent much of his time this county for the past two years as an agent for fruit trees...the father accepted $100 and gave Johnson an indemnifying bond, securing him against any loss by prosecution of the case...Mr. Samuel KEELY brother of the girl,...would not suffer that kind of settlement [and caused the arrest to be made]..."

James F. JOHNSON married Annetta AULT, the daughter of Mary J. KEELY and Adam AULT five years after this incident (per "Fulton County Cemetery Inscriptions", p 256, "I.O.O.F. Cem. Rochester.") Mary J. and Caroline were sisters.
