Hannah Bennett of Vigo County
HANNAH A. BENNETT, born in Ohio on May 31, 1814, was the sixth child of James N. BENNETT (5 Dec 1786-28 Aug 1856) and Barbara BOWMAN BENNETT (18 May 1785 - 1844). She married Miles M. JOHNSON in 1837 in Vigo County, IN. Hannah's father, James was the son of Thomas and Susan (or Susannah) MARQUIS BENNETT. Family lore says that Thomas was a Quaker in what is now West Virginia, but lost his lands because of refusal to swear allegiance after the Revolutionary war. He moved back east to Wayne, Pennsylvania. James and Barbara BENNETT moved to Sugar Creek Township in 1816. Some of their children, older than Hannah, would probably have been born in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, and their marriage and any such births are possibly recorded in the Quaker records from Radnor, which can be found in the Friends Library at Swarthmore College.
The author is the gr-gr-grandson of Hannah's sister, Lavina, and has received much assistance from Reba Gale, a gr-granddaughter of Hannah.
